Dave Colden

June 13th was a busy Rotary day with an executive meting in the morning and
our regular lunch meeting. Everyone seemed to be in an upbeat mood at lunch,
probably a result of the warming sunshine outside.

We held a brief review of business with the main point of a policy statement
affecting the future activities of the Fernie Rotary Club and its members.
The policy approved by the executive states as follows:

“No member of the Fernie Rotary Club shall through their words or actions
commit the Fernie Rotary Club to any financial or social obligations without
the approval of the Board of Directors, before their actions bind the club
to respond.”

A brief discussion was held regarding the money split form the golf
tournament. Equal payments will be made to the chosen recipients. The
balance of funds will carry the VISA expense and possibly purchase a
projector for the club’s use.

Jeff gave a very interesting presentation on the products he offers from his
new shop on Second Ave – The Fernie Shirt Company. We have some good ideas
for Rotary apparel that Jeff can supply. Thanks Jeff

Ted thanked the club for its participation in the friendship exchange and
entertaining the British visitors

Remember

 a.. Kevin’s birthday – June 15th
b.. BBQ at Mike’s home – June 27th
c.. No lunch meeting – June 27th
d.. Next board meeting – July 11th
e.. Barb to be our speaker June 20th

Dave Colden

The month of May has been a very busy time for Rotary and myself and I have
fallen behind in the weekly meeting reports

Mat 9th,meeting 42, was immediately prior to the Golf Tournament, Rob Gay ,
the Executive Director of Community Futures gave us a excellent presentation
detailing what Community Futures does and how it operates. Rob was
introduced by Rotarian Ev and thanked by Rotarian Bill.

The Bank of Nova Scotia’s representative, Claudette Daigle presented the
club with a cheque for $2000.00 to match our earnings from the Griz Pins
sales project. This donation was most gratefully received and the club
thanks Rotarian Barb and Rotarian Elizabeth for their efforts to secure this
donation

The Golf tournament was a success on May 12th. With seventy-five players and
ninety-seven for dinner, the turn out was smaller than last year. However,
the auction was very successful. Thanks to all of you who helped and gave
generously of your time to make this event happen. A great weather day
helped to bring about our success.

We did not have a speaker on May 16th, but a lively discussion of the Golf
Tournament was held as a general forum

The letter of intent between the Fernie District Arts Council and the Fernie
rotary Club has been signed so the Taste of Fernie can be jointly planned
and executed. The first organizational meeting should be held shortly.

The speaker for the May23rd meeting was unable to attend. The meeting
proceeded to discuss various issues related to the Fernie Rotary Club

There will not be a noon meeting on Wed, May 30th. The meeting will be at
6:00 pm at Knox United Church , whereIincoming President Tom will chair
his planning meeting. Pizza will be ordered and the cost shared among those
attending. This is a very important meeting to help Tom formulate plans for
our club during the next 12 months. Members and interested parties should
try to attend and give your input.

Happy Anniversary

As I have been away between meetings, I missed posting a summary of the last
two meetings

On April 25/07 we were pleased to have Michael McPhie who is the President
of the Mining Association of British Columbia. Michael was very articulate
in his passion for the mining industry in our province. He spoke about the
province as a whole and about the Elk Valley specifically. All who were in a
attendance were well entertained and informed by Michael’s presentation

The Rotary Club extended our congratulations to Mary and Sparling East on
their 65th wedding anniversary on April 25th. We had three other guests at
this meeting: Ross Bannetyne from the Valley Sunrise Club of Dundas Ont, Bob
Ransford and Byng Giraud, who were traveling with Michael

The May 2nd meeting received a presentation from Bob Livsey, aka, Nature Bob
who spoke about the Fernie Nature Club which Bob has formed. The club
started one year ago with Bob’s idea and today has over 65 members. The club
runs hikes, walks, bird counts, and many other activities including socials

Bob also took the opportunity to describe the various hikes and nature walks
being run through FAR this summer. Bob will be guiding these activities

A plan was put forward for members to complete their solicitations for gifts
and to promote the tournament by putting in a team and being active to
encourage people to attend

Ross Bannetyne from the Valley Sunrise Club in Dundas, Ont was our only
guest

Remember

The Rotary meeting, Wednesday April 18th was a smaller but upbeat meeting.

Rotarians Randal and Casey conducted a short talk about the National
Geographic Crown of the Continent Geotourism Map Guide ,explaining the
concept and its origins. A workshop was held to discuss items and locations
of particular interest in our area that we as Fernie Rotary might nominate
for inclusion. This discussion detailed very interesting suggestions and
comments about our area and its history. It is always great to hear feedback
from fellow Rotarians like Sparling who have such a vast knowledge of our
area and our own Rotary. Thanks Randal and Casey for a fine workshop.

I was pleased to report that Dick Mulholland had called me to advise that he
had safely arrived in Ontario on Good Friday. He is currently staying with
his daughter but hopes to be in a senior’s apartment by the end of the
month. He reports that his health is better.

The Golf tournament is fast approaching. Please, everyone do your part to
obtain prize and auction items. Try to put a team together to participate
and have fun.

Happy Birthday to Wilda Quail – April 19

Congratulations to Brendan for competing in the PPP solo!!

Next week we will have the President of the Mining Association of BC as our
guest speaker. Michael McPhie will be a very interesting speaker and Casey
is going to thank him. It will be worth coming to and bringing a guest

Remember:

 a.. Team # 1 Bingo- April 22
b.. Coin boxes- turn in asap
c.. Taste of Fernie planning is starting soon
d.. 3 people have second half dues outstanding

President’s Report

April 11,207

The April 11/07 meeting of the Fernie Rotary Club was a business meeting
that carried forward a number of important topics. We were pleased to
welcome as visitors, Deanna and Jim Dinwoodie, guests of Rotarian Barb.
Remember guests are always welcome at our meetings

The first and most important agenda item was the introduction of our new
member Tony Grandoni. It was a pleasure to welcome Tony into the fellowship
of Rotary. Tony was well introduced by Rotarian Elizabeth.

Elizabeth gave us the final report on a successful Griz Pin Project. We will
be accepting our cheque for two thousand dollars at the Annual Meeting of
the Chamber on April 19th.

The Golf Tournament ,May 12th, is fast approaching. Each and every member
needs to put forth a strong effort to complete their solicitations to make
this the best tournament fundraiser ever. Each member should endeavor to put
together a team of five golfers to participate and to promote the event at
every opportunity.

An excellent discussion was held around the test flight of the Crotarian.
The format of getting the news and events out to each member on a weekly
basis was endorsed. The format about how to do this became the issue for
discussion. The Crotarian and the newly formatted website (fernierotary.org)
are two vehicles designed to accomplish the same goal. The website has a
broader potential audience and therefore it was felt that this is the venue
to pursue. We should have all the same information available on the we site,
including articles of interest, members, meeting reports photo’s, events,
speakers. To submit items for the web site please e-mail them to Rotarian
Kevin at kev@kevs.ca. This will encourage all of us to access the website regularly. Also, potential new members would be able to review what we are doing and thus perhaps encourage new members and visitors to Fernie Rotary.

Remember:

 a.. Bingo Team # ! – April 15th
b.. Coin boxes return next week
c.. District Conference – June 1 – 3
d.. Snowy Peaks RV Park – 100th birthday party- see Brenda for details
e.. Golf Committee meeting – 11:30, April; 18th @ Park Place

Rotary Report

March 14th

The Rotary Club of Fernie was formally recognized for its contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society at its March 14th regular meeting at the Park Place Hotel. Margy Denees and Bev Delyea of the Canadian Cancer Society presented a framed certificate of appreciation for the work and donations of our club.

Rotarian Evelyn introduced the guest speaker, Dawn DeyDey who gave us a very interesting presentation on the Community Garden. This is a project of which many of us were unfamiliar and learned considerable information on the background of this site and the development of this project. Great speaker Ev!!

The Griz Pin project is winding down with Rotarian Elizabeth keeping us up to speed on the success of this event. It would appear that over five thousand dollars in Griz pin sales was generated in a very short time due in no small part to Elizabeth and her committee of Brenda and Barb.

Happy Birthday was sung to Knude Larsen (March 14th) and Bill Inglis (March 18th).

Remember Bingo Team # 3 Solicit those golf prizes early Fill and return the coin boxes for Foundation. We hope to make our submission to Foundation in early April District Conference June 1-3, see me for registration District Assembly March 31 in Couer D’Alene, Idaho.
